about

Extractes d’un diari is a beautiful title and also a play on words and concepts. Aren’t diaries extracts from our lives, from our experiences, blank spaces of emotion or grief which must be filled? A diary can take the form of a film (as in the works of Jonas Mekas and José Luis Guerín), a novel, a comic or a record. A diary is a malleable material that accepts many styles. Balago’s last album, this time David Crespo, Roger Crespo and Guim Serradesanferm, is a sound diary that always evokes images which glide over the crest of that sound. As it always happens with Balago, we have here a much melancholic record —as a state of mind, of course, but also as a conjugation of the past in order to turn it into present— and also a very cinematographic record. Its twenty-one tracks, compressed in almost fifty concentrated and exquisite minutes and developed with modified samplers, synthesizers and music software, can be noticed as a vast and ever-changing landscape, like the music of these inexistent films which Brian Eno or Barry Adamson played, but using another style. Some tracks appeal to a certain abstraction, whereas in others a strict sense of melody prevails. The rhythm freezes sometimes and one can hear echoes of a phantasmagoric electronic music, of a mechanical and sleepwalking ballet. Extractes d’un diari is a concept album in the best sense of the word, since it resorts to a formal idea that develops slowly, with the patience with which a spider spins its web. And this concept is exactly that of the tracks that help to tie songs together, as a rest, a break or a relaxed atmosphere. Balago focus exactly on what others use as an addition, as a filler, which is worthy but sometimes expendable, and give a really different dimension to these transitions, which now are not a simple cut between songs but the song itself. It is in this sense that one can compare this band to the filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, who prefers to film the rests, the things that happen during the moments when nothing happens. During Balago’s tracks between songs, which are the raison d’être of a whole album, a lot of things happen, and its cadences are never going to leave us.
