about

For the last four years, from the release of Balago’s superb second album “El Segon Pis” to the launch of “d’aquii”, David Crespo has had time to compose two Soundtracks, one for “Pudor”, from the brothers Tristán and David Ulloa; and the other for “El Rey de la Montaña”, from Gonzalo López-Gallego. He has also collaborated with the Contemporary Dance Group Erre que Erre, and has contributed to the music project Ten Thousand Islands with singer-songwriter Maria Monferrer.
The death and separation of our loved ones, friends, partners, family or pets, leave an unforgettable mark. Crespo now officially known as the sole member of Balago, was under the influence of great personal frustration and sadness whilst composing his last record. The desolation and melancholy of this album is like a punch in the face if one is brave enough to enter its world alone in the intimacy of one’s headphones, and willing to discover hard, dense and extreme emotions.
Musically, “d’aquii” is not only a clear step forward for Balago, but also a unique proposal for the Spanish music scene. Not only has he evoked the essence, the modus operandi, the aesthetics, and the emotion of artists and bands one can find located completely aside from the orthodox and conventions of the independent Spanish music scene, such as; Stars of the Lid, Bark Psychosis, Seefeel, Loscil, Eluvium, Deaf Center, Elegi, Fennesz or Tim Hecker, he has also made it to intensify and complement his repertoire with the idea of a Film Soundtrack, with echoes from Cliff Martinez, Hans Zimmer, Angelo Badalamenti or even Eleni Karaindrou, but always with his own personal discourse, brave and ambitious.
Obsessed with the sound, meticulous and sure of his talent, David Crespo is a rare find in our musical microcosmos, having the guts to think of and successfully achieve the orchestration for a great piece of redemption, both radical and full of sadness.
We need more like him.
